Ecological health of coral reefs in Zanzibar

چکیده

Coral reefs are important ecosystems in terms of their biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Particularly at local scales, coral vulnerable to natural anthropogenic disturbances, leading the degradation reef health. Here, we employed two different methods monitor First, conducted line transect surveys record benthic community structure infer ecological Secondly, trace metal concentrations sediment samples a bioindicator sponge species, Haliclona fascigera, were compared among sites detect cryptic unknown sources pollution. The study area comprised six situated along coast Zanzibar’s main agglomeration, Stone Town, subject types disturbances conservation management schemes. Overall, health was found decrease with increasing proximity living hard cover being particularly low on closest which coincided greater fishing, tourism, pollution pressures. Reef assessments based analyses differed from surveys. All showed high levels arsenic cadmium contamination, some revealing concerning chromium, copper zinc. significantly between each other concentration for both sediments (p = 0.031, PERMANOVA) 0.001, PERMANOVA). Ecological Health Assessment of the Surface Sediments of the Coral Reefs of Khark and Kharko Islands (Persian Gulf, Iran)

To assess the ecological risk of the coral reef habitats of Khark and Kharko islands in the Persian Gulf, (Bushehr province), the surface sediment samples were collected from seven stations, in September 2019. The islands have a great ecological value due to the presence of coral reefs. The amounts of potentially toxic elements, sediment texture, total organic matter, total phosphorus and total...

Ecological Studies on Two Amphiprion Species in Maldivian Coral Reefs

Amphiprion clarkii and A. nigripes were found in coral reefs of three different atolls in the Maldives. A. clarkii was associated with five species of host anemones, but A. nigripes was only found in Heteractis magnifica. In few cases, both anemonefishes have utilized the same individual of H. magnifica. There was no significant correlation between the size of the anemones and the number of the...

Ecological limitations to the resilience of coral reefs 3

6 Abstract The decline of coral reefs has been broadly 7 attributed to human stressors being too strong and perva8 sive, whereas biological processes that may render coral 9 reefs fragile have been sparsely considered. Here we 10 review several ecological factors that can limit the ability 11 of coral reefs to withstand disturbance. These include: (1) 12 Many species lack the adaptive capacity ...

Sewage impacts coral reefs at multiple levels of ecological organization.

Against a backdrop of rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification which pose global threats to coral reefs, excess nutrients and turbidity continue to be significant stressors at regional and local scales. Because interventions usually require local data on pollution impacts, we measured ecological responses to sewage discharges in Surin Marine Park, Thailand. Wastewater disposal significan...
